## What it is
Redact for AI is a 100% local desktop application that pseudonymizes legal documents so law firms can use AI without exposing client data. It finds names, identifiers, and addresses in a document and replaces them with consistent placeholders (for example Person_1, Client_1) on the user's own computer, using an advanced recognition model that runs entirely on the device. The user then sends only the pseudonymized text to any AI tool. When the AI answers, one click restores the real names locally.

## Key facts
- The application runs entirely on the user's computer. It works with the network connection turned off. Nothing is uploaded, ever.
- Pseudonymization is reversible: a local mapping file allows restoring the real names from the AI's draft.
- Human review is part of the workflow: advanced recognition is never 100%, and the user must review every document before sharing the pseudonymized text with an AI.
- The software is free of charge and will stay free.
- Documents never leave the user's computer. The website's download form is the only place where personal data (name, email, optional firm) is collected, and only for account and update purposes.

- Detection engines for United States identifiers (SSN, EIN), United Kingdom identifiers (postcodes, NI numbers, company numbers), Italian identifiers (codice fiscale, Partita IVA), Brazilian identifiers (CPF, CNPJ, OAB), and Spanish identifiers (DNI, NIE, CIF).
- Built-in OCR for scanned PDFs in Italian, English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German.
- The installer is around 430 MB. At first launch the app asks which languages the user works in and downloads the advanced recognition pack for each. Users working in a single language download much less than users working in all six.
